A Bit About UNICO . . .
Over the course of the sunny, summer days at the Festa Italiana last year, UNICO National was introduced to Portland. Dr. Nicholas D'Amico, visiting from California, spent his two days in Portland informing the community about the largest Italian-American Service Organization in the United States. He stated that as the Western Expansion Director for the organization, his hope was to see a UNICO Chapter in the Northwest. He was recruiting in Seattle as well. Since then, a dynamic group of people in Portland have come together to help make this a reality.
UNICO National promotes much goodwill on both a national and local level. Countless dollars have been raised for victims of National and International disasters. Wherever, the need, UNICO has been there. The organization leads in providing a variety of school scholarships and awards, both locally and nationally, offering encouragement; satisfying needs; and promoting talent. UNICO has earned national acclaim for its ongoing research project pertaining to Mental Health issues and a disease known as Cooley's Anemia which is particularly prevalent in people of Italian descent. Hundreds of thousands of dollars have been donated for research, educational awareness and testing. In addition to the above-mentioned charities, UNICO has also contributed to many other diverse and various charities as well.
